Foreword
Once you have begun to read chapter one of this book, you will think that this entire foreword should have been part of it. There is a reason that it isn’t. This part of the book will explain exactly what the main purpose of this book is, and what it is designed to do.
When we are just babes, the first things we learn to say are usually Momma, Dada, No and Why.
Our parents at one time called each other love, babe, darlin’, and sweet cheeks at one time. Then they find themselves pregnant or adopting and suddenly all that goes out the window. Our fathers used to come home from work and yell, “Hi Hon. I’m home.” Now they come in with, “I’m home Mom, what’s for dinner?”
They sit at the dinner table and the young wife does not say, “Babe, would you hand me the salt?” Now it is “Dad, I need the salt please.” Our grandparents even take to calling their children Mom and Dad instead of the other way around. They are suddenly no longer Mom and Dad themselves but Nana and Papa. (By the way, I am ‘Pop’.)
Since we spend the majority of our early moments with them and we hear them call each other these names, it is only reasonable that we learn them ourselves. These are also the words we hear most often until we begin to crawl. Then that ugly word ‘No’ comes into play all of a sudden.
There is something decidedly wrong with that word. Once we begin to hear it, (usually just before we begin to show any independence) it is the word that we will hear most, by everyone older than us for many years to come. But, try saying it yourself. OUCH!
The one word that we will use more than Mom, Dad and definitely more than the no is the word why. We actually simulate the meaning of the word from the moment we are able to think at all, while still in the womb. But to put it into a word becomes a great achievement. Our parents of course will regret our learning that word for almost as long as we are not allowed to say no to them.
It is the single most important word in our lives, throughout our lives. So, my question to you is; Why do you want to start your own business?
Okay, I heard someone out there say, “Ah Duh.”
Well, it really isn’t as stupid a question as you might think. There are as many reasons for starting your own business as there are for why you haven’t already started it.
The biggest reason that I hear, to the question; ‘Why haven’t you already started your small business?’ is “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do or what I should do.” Now, something in your world has changed and you are reading this eBook.
Chances are that you already have at least an inkling of an idea as to what sort of business that you want to start. That’s fine. It is good to have dreams, especially if they are still a bit fuzzy. This book is all about that dream and the decisions that will make it clearer.
If you have your feet firmly planted in the vision of your new business you may want to run to the end of this book. You will find there a guarantee form. Fill it out, email the entire book back to me and I will refund your money. This book will not help you.
With that firmly planted picture in your mind, there is no room for alteration or improvement until you have developed it and put it to the test. The fact is that your being successful at this point in the game, under those circumstances, are slim to none. Most new businesses fail within the first year. By the end of the second year, more than 70% have failed.
When I was a child, there was a story that you would often hear both in church and in school. It is the story of two men. One man builds a house on a foundation of solid rock. The other man builds his house on a foundation of sand. The story details vary at this point, but the moral is that the house built on sand can not stand. It slips away with the shifting of the sand, while the house on the rock is there for the duration.
This book will help you with is laying the groundwork for your business and giving it a solid foundation that is built upon gradually.
If you have already developed that photograph of your online business in your mind, without completing these preliminary steps, you will find that within three to six months you will be making drastic changes to at least 60% of your business, after realizing that it wasn't working.
At the end of about nine months, you will find that you need to recreate almost all of your business. IF, you don't give up!
You will either write yourself a new business plan altogether, sometimes more than once. Redesign the business itself or completely change course. One way or another your house will begin to shift with the foundation of sand within a very short period of time.
This book is your foundation of solid rock.
